  • problem with Radeon AH 4650 (agp)

    Hi!
i bought a new graphic card to the box I use for the kids, replacing the Radeon 9700 with a Radeon 4650. I really wanted to get a Nvidia due to the driver situation, but as the motherboard (Epox 8k7a) limited me to an AGP-card i went with ATi. I didn'e expect stellar performance but at least i expected it to run. Well it doesn't.

I have a clean install of Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 on a box with AMD Athlon +2200, 500 mb ram, and an Asus RAdeon AH 4650. When I enable the propriarity drivers and reboot, the system hangs before login. Any clues?

    thanx / Anfanglir

Can you post me an output of "cat /boot/grub/menu.lst"?

It seems your kernel is booting into "single" mode, reading your dmesg output:

Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic root=UUID=e9ce018e-e87e-49dc-865a-25e6b7d5565e ro single nomodeset
If so, change your menu.lst file (if you're in stuck in the console, type "sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst" without the quotes) and delete the "single" line.

The rest seems to be ok...

        Cheers

              1. You have to disable kernel modesetting (the "nomodeset" line was OK), or then, you'll have lots of trouble with Catalyst...

              2. It's not the /etc/default/grub file that I was talking to you (it's the /boot/grub/menu.lst one)... /etc/default/grub is going to generate you a "default" grub file when you, for instance, update you kernel...

              Cheers

There is no menu.lst though with Grub2, but there is a grub.cfg in that directory, could that be it:
