If you want to install the latest fglrx from AMD's website, you need to make sure that you have removed any trace of previous fglrx installations, including the version included in the repositories. Simply overwriting a previous installation is not guaranteed to work

Assuming you are running a stock Ubuntu Lucid, the following command sequence should do the trick. If you are running anything from the xorg-edgers ppa, or a non-stock kernel, you will have issues.

    wget www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-10-9-x86.x86_64.run
    sh ati-driver-installer-10-9-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/lucid
    sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb
    sudo aticonfig --initial

If you have any errors/failures after a reboot, post a copy of your dmesg and Xorg.0.log

    Good luck.

      Use the x-swat ppa

This has been the best way I've found to get updated drivers that actually work. Add the PPA to your sources and update everything, then install fglrx from synaptic. More info here. To keep from being hosed upon reboot, make sure you completely remove all previous drivers/packages before doing this.

As for "the blob", I'll use the OSS driver when it actually works for 3d acceleration, and when it manages fan speed properly. Not being able to play games and listening to my hair dryer of a 5770 makes me sad. But seriously, when it works, I'll use the hell out of it.

Oke i have been trying things yesterday .
        Installed the deb files .
When i tryed the make a xorg.conf with ati config
I got the error ati config is not installed .
This is the problem like always but i found somewhere in the dark corners of google
A command that let me pick the driver .
Apperently ubuntu did not change it self from mesa to the driver .
When i did the command and logged out and back in the driver where active .
And gave me a good fps boost with WoW .
I did not restart the pc so i hope it still want's to boot tonight .
But i got a feeling its gonna be.

And about the oss drivers ya i hope we get that soon .
But as long as i wanna play wow that's not a option for me.

What command was that? This could be helpful for future users with the same problem.

Maybe you should be using the hotfix version of 10.9:

                  ubuntu 10.4.1

                  Hi kamelot & Yall,

please ignore the "Black noise" on these forums-it has got much worse over the last six months. Frankly, these fanatic posters need to be warned and then banned-as per the rules of the forums.

Now, in regards ATI/AMD drivers & Ubuntu, I struck the same type of issues my self, some years ago, when I tried Ubuntu. The way I sees it, Ubuntu makes some stuff simple, at the expense of make other stuff hard. "Easy" to install, but harder to "tweak and fine tune."

After some time going down the Ubuntu road, I came back to Debian, which maybe "harder" to install, but "tweak and fine tune," is easier. In regards the latter, I have broken my system a lot, but to the same degree, I learn stuff. Still, there are times I just need it to work-then I go into "if it is not broke, don't fix it....." ;-)

                  Either ways, good luck.

                  GreekGeek :-)

                    @greekgeek.

Ya i know i should just ignore it .

But i know ubuntu is harder to tweak that's why i have debian as 3e OS
im running the debian testing squeeze .
Its a bit harder but so much cooler its a learning processes al the way with every linux distro .
And the way you can set your distro to your hand i totaly love it .
