      As far as what I mean by 'generic' it uses xserver-xorg-vesa drivers.

        your only failure is you only test up to catalyst 10.9 but the catalyst for 10.10 is the 10.10 cataylst..

        try
        apt-get install fglrx
        aticonfig --initial
