Ubuntu 10.04 contains new kernel, X (radeon) and 3D drivers which all work pretty well together and which are configured to use kernel modesetting at startup. The driver stack was in the middle of a major transition when 9.10 locked down; many users have more success with either 9.04 (pre-transition-ish) or 10.04 (post-transition-ish).

You can update the drivers in 9.10 but because of the move to kernel modesetting it might be easier to pick up a newer distro release, or at least try the live CD.
