  • Black screen with ATI 5750

I have been using (Debian) Linux extensively for my servers and recently decided to try out Ubuntu 10.4 on my desktop.

The computer has two ATI 5750 cards which presumably have full driver support, however, instead of booting up the screen turns entirely black before installation even finishes.

I tried using the live version of Ubuntu 10.4 and ran into the same issue.

Is this a known problem? Is there an alternative driver I can force Ubuntu to use, at least for the installation? If there is, how would I go about doing so?

Do I have any options aside from selling the video cards and throwing myself out the window?

Try xforcevesa option or better use Kanotix

Kano, I hate to ask, but where do I use the xforcevesa option?

Will I be able to use the official ATI Catalyst driver once everything is running?

Use it like a kernel boot option.
