FWIW, KDE4 ran fine on my Pentium4 laptop. I had 1 GB RAM, though (later expanded to 2GB). KDE4 is OK if you turn down the eyecandy, but it does profit from extra memory.
KDE3 is unmaintained, but would be a good choice. Standard GNOME (without compiz) should run just fine. GNUStep WMs (WindowMaker and AfterStep) also offer a functional and minimalist shell, but you'll probably end up running GNOME or KDE programs one way or another, so it won't save much in terms of resources.
