Catalyst 10.6 black squares in firefox and Xorg 1.8 freezes after update

I'm in the same situation. It's extremely typical for graphics drivers on Linux, unfortunately: you can never get just what you want. The worst part is that 90% of the time, and especially since Windows XP SP2 or so, you can always get exactly what you want on Windows, and even usually on Mac.

Correction : it is extremly typical with ati drivers I never had any big trouble with nvidia proprietary driver in 8 years of using them...

The black square problem has been talked about in the 10.6 release thread. Bug report and workaround: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1845

I see it a lot in firefox, making it nearly unusable. I only see some black flickers in Opera though.
