Phoronix: Unifying The ARM Linux Platform With Linaro

There's a slew of ARM-based devices coming to the market from netbooks to smartphones, but for Linux users the ARM platform has traditionally struggled as its rather fragmented between the hardware and software. Mark Shuttleworth has a blog post describing this fragmentation and challenge for software developers to target ARM devices, but fortunately there is a cure. In that same post, Mark announces Linaro and his hopes for this industry project...

This might actually mean you can install any distro on any ARM machine like with other CPU arches? Actual freedom??? Amazing.

ARM has a lot going for it and it's time for Linux to gain firmer traction in the ARM CPU space and if Linaro can pull this all together it sounds like a winner.

Netbooks and other smart devices with ARM chips will benefit from this.

"linaro"? In italian that's an offensive way to call a linux user
            Just like its "winaro" counterpart

Gentoo Linux already supports ARM and has for quite some time, although if your particular flavor of ARM does not have a stage3 tarball available for it, building a cross-compiler to make one is a pain. I am still trying to succeed with that on a Linksys NSLU2.

you can do that already with a efikaMX Freescale Arm A8 800Mhz SOC and one of their Many OS distro's

the trick is their Aura firmware.... does away with expensive BSP's( Board Support Packages)and makes porting any OS as simple as porting to x86

http://genesiamericas.com is presenting this awesome looking ARM Cortex A8 based Smartbook design, presented by Genesi who designed the hardware in collabora...
