Very slow 2D performance with Catalyst 10.5 on Lucid Lynx

The install instructions recommend :

- full uninstall
- restore the previous xorg.conf (uninstall doesn't do that)
- reboot
- install new
- run aticonfig --initial

(all as root or sudo)

Alright, so I've done this (using emergence's guide) and now I'm running into strange behavior that may or may not be expected.

So, first I uninstalled everything:

Then rebooted and installed fglrx (here's the contents of /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log):

and rebooted again.

To verify that I was running the new 10.6 driver I checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log and glxinfo, and both looked okay to me:

However, when I now run gtkperf, I get results like this:

This is about 8 times slower than what I was seeing when I had a "bad" install of 10.6, but around twice as fast as 10.5. (For ease of recall, here's the original gtkperf runs I did: https://gist.github.com/869fcb0ff93fbedbf1f7)

Unfortunately I never checked just what I was running under the "bad" installation. It's possible that I was actually using the radeon driver (which I know has very fast 2D performance but no 3D or whatnot) and not fglrx in that case.

Can any ATI developers (bridgman, I guess that's you) confirm whether or not these gtkperf numbers are expected under 10.6?
