Phoronix to use Sun Solaris OS in Hardware Reviews and Introduce New Testing Guidelines

Since the start of the year we have been working on revising our motherboard testing guidelines in addition to our GNU/Linux benchmarking and compatibility testing in general. With the roll out today of the "new Phoronix" and our sixth generation content management system (PHXCMS-6) we are also announcing some of the other changes to come. Most notably, Phoronix will be adopting and supporting the Solaris Operating System (OS). Our primary focus at Phoronix has been and will remain on covering the GNU/Linux hardware scene; however, the Solaris OS will become standard for use in a majority of our reviews and other hardware articles. We have been monitoring the Solaris landscape for quite some time and we see today's adoption as an important milestone for Solaris desktop users and the alternative operating system community in general. Our goal is to provide Solaris users with the most detailed information when it comes to compatibility and performance for desktop and server hardware. Sun Microsystems does have x86/x64 hardware compatibility lists for the Solaris operating system, but we aim to provide much more information than that in our articles as well as catering this information to enthusiasts and desktop users.

In regards to our new motherboard testing plans, on top of Solaris OS we will be using a total of four different operating systems / GNU/Linux distributions. We will continue to offer GNU/Linux benchmarks that compare each motherboard against its competition, but we will be focusing less upon the shear performance and overclocking and more upon the product's compatibility in these different environments. With each motherboard review we will be using Fedora, Ubuntu, Solaris, and another yet to be determined distribution. In addition to the Solaris OS, we are investigating the use BeleniX or NexentaOS. The yet to be determined distribution will likely be a small project that is a one man operation and not heard of by most in the GNU/Linux community. Of the possibilities that comes to mind are Kate OS and SLAX. We will still strongly focus upon the performance in our reviews, but at the repeated request of our readers, we are greatly expanding the compatibility aspect.

The Solaris OS will not only be used in our motherboard reviews but we will be extending this coverage into processors, NVIDIA graphics cards, and peripherals. We have also established a Solaris news section and have begun to populate this Solaris news area. Likewise, there is now a Solaris OS section in the Phoronix Forums.

In a little over a month from now Phoronix will be turning three years old and we look forward to continuing to serve the GNU/Linux community and now the Solaris community as well. In May we will also be covering Sun's JavaOne Conference in San Francisco, California. Our new testing guidelines are not yet finalized, but will be in the coming weeks. If you would like to share your thoughts or suggestions on what you would like to see, we would appreciate any and all comments in the Phoronix Forums. You can expect the first batch of reviews using these new testing standards starting next month.
