Phoronix: MPlayer 1.0 RC3 Finally Arrives

MPlayer 1.0 initially entered its release candidate phase in 2006 followed by a second release candidate in October of 2007. A third release candidate was supposed to be made available in 2009 following the release of FFmpeg 0.5, but it never ended up actually being released. However, today MPlayer 1.0 RC3 has been finally released...

And to think Wine's release candidates come out every week...

No person in his right mind would prefer this over the current version. This release was only made because of brain damaged distro packagers who have no idea how MPlayer is supposed to be used.

"While MPlayer 1.0 RC3 was just released, MPlayer developers recommend using Subversion snapshots."

          lol

Because checking out random bleeding-edge SVN code, doing some quick tests, and then packaging it for the Ubuntu crowd is a great idea...

            lol.

No. That's why I said they don't know how MPlayer is supposed to be used. And it seems you don't know either. The SVN is not bleeding edge. It's the supported way of using MPlayer. Upstream only cuts releases for people (like you) who still "don't get it."

So you can keep your "lol" :P

SVN and the like are just revision control systems this doesn't say anything about how stable the code is, some people seem to forget that.

If you really need latest codec support you have to compile mplayer as snapshot anyway. Also to test if pgs subs work you need that too - they still don't. I have got 3 scripts for Debian/Ubuntu to do that:

pure svn - use that to report problems (maybe with disabled audiofix)

the git mt branch - from my own benchmarks only slightly faster with more threads, you can try the same options with svn:

vaapi patched - maybe the most interesting variant - this builds a bit older snapshot becauce updating to svn usually breaks the other patches

I usually add some out of tree patches if needed.

This is MPlayer, they haven't had a proper release ever.

That's the ONLY way to do it.

If you don't like, it there are other players you can use, built on the same libraries.
