Cross-distro way to get location of app-defaults folder

Hi, a question to any experienced X11 dev/user: is there any way to reliably find the location of the X11 app-defaults folder on any distribution? I.e. ubuntu (hence guess also debian) uses
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults
while fedora/redhat use
/usr/share/X11/app-defaults/
.

Right, so one way seems to put the resource files in some folder and then simply export XAPPLRESDIR with that folder
