I think that's the article which says he did it but doesn't give any indication of how.

Maybe just maybe it has something to do with this:
3D support: added OpenGL 2.1 support
Meego needs 3d or it won't work.
That's what I meant; I suspect that if I could install a Virtualbox driver which supports 3D rendering it would work. Or perhaps it's doing something nasty with the Intel graphics chips directly which it still won't support on a non-Intel driver.

I had another go and pressing F8 at boot allowed me to get into the OS as single-user; I'll see if I can get a driver built and installed since there's no gcc or kernel headers by default.

Got the Vbox driver installed, X11 works, OpenGL works... Meego doesn't. Looks like it's relying on some non-standard extension or something.

it is possible to run MeeGo - without the hardware restrictions which make trouble for virtualizers - in qemu:

Meego 1.0 (kernel 2.6.33.3-11.1-netbook), image size: 787 MB (extracted: 2.5 GB)

          MeeGo 0.9 (kernel 2.6.33.3-8.1-iv), image size: 282.3 MB (extracted: 1.2 GB) - with XFCE4
