It's like at the time fglrx loads it finds and unsupported chip, and then breaks, maybe it is only vendor ID issue. But I am guessing here, I have no idea what is happening, sorry.

If you don't have done yet, you should fill a bug at amd support page.
Well I'm in the process of filing a bug at ati.cchtml.com
saying that they forgot to put VisionTek HD5850 cards are windows only. lol I'm mean shit, the card is pretty much ATI's base cards not much deviation.

Screw playing heroes of newerth, quake wars, or the new upcoming steam.

It is worth to try a fresh install too, maybe you screw up something.

      Also you can try:

-boot up in recovery mode, root console
      -uninstall fglrx
      -delete xorg.conf
      -delete /etc/ati
      -install fglrx

Pretty sure I didn't screw anything up. But I will try another fresh install just to be sure it wasn't a fluke.

Either way if it takes this much effort to get my consumer card working. I'd be worried about others that purely run linux for fun. I have a CS degree and have dealt with crap like this before. I'm no idiot.

When you switch to nvidia you don't need to sit in graphics card forums talking about bugs and other problems because the card/drivers "just work".
I used to frequent rage3d.com for all my fglrx problems but it seems to have died off and phoronix.com has taken its place.

Have you considered trying another distro supported by fglrx?

              Indeed...

Aaaaaaaanyway... Have you tried what I suggested on the first page?
When I still had my CRT monitor, the first time I plugged it onto my then Asus EAH4830 (dual DVI) the refresh rate wouldn't go over 60Hz (mind you in was in winxp), connecting it to the other DVI plug solved the issue.

              Worth trying IMO

That's what I meant, try the other connection.

Sorry to get off-topic, but will there be a Kanotix 2010 release?
