  • Videa tearing when played on KDE with desktop effects enabled!

    Hi,

First: I'm not quite sure if this belongs here or in the Desktop section.. I think it depends on where the cause of this problem lies (which I don't know)

So, i'm trying to play video in linux.. It woks just fine if i disable the KDE desktop effects, but as soon as i enable desktop effects i have video tearing.. like vsync is disabled. I use KDE 4.4.2 (latest version). I've tried every single setting KDE has to offer in effect terms (specially enable direct rendering and use vsync) but they don't seem to impact playback at all.

    I also ran those commands:
sudo aticonfig --initial // to get a xorg.conf file from scratch generated by aticonfig. I on purposely removed my old xorg.conf
    sudo aticonfig --sync-video=on
    sudo aticonfig --sync-vsync=on

That resulted in the following xorg.conf (i didn't add a single thing manually!)
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
    Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
    EndSection

    Section "Files"
    EndSection

    Section "Module"
    EndSection

    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
    Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
    Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
    Option "DPMS" "true"
    EndSection

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
    Driver "fglrx"
    Option "Capabilities" "0x00000800"
    Option "TexturedVideoSync" "on"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
    Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
    Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Viewport 0 0
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
So, to wrap up a bit. I can play video smoothly and without tearing with desktop effects disabled. If I enable desktop effects i get video tearing.

Some more stuff that might (?) be interesting to hunt this issue down.

The settings are applied (as you can see in xorg.conf file i posted!)
The cccle has everything turned on (vsync to highest etcetera).

the xorg.conf settings do nothing, when you run glxgears it will spin still fast.

VSync is not supported by Catalyst with desktop effects enabled. I thought it's a well known fact.

wans't a known fact for me...

            some new findings:
            - There is also video taering with desktop effects disabled although barely noticeable.. I just notice it when watching video for more then a few minutes
            - The oss radeon driver does not have this tearing on my 5770 card but has the side effect that fullscreen is... just not something you would want to do on the radeon driver that currently has everything in software rendering...

In the early days of the radeonhd driver (before acceleration) people were having pretty good luck playing video with mplayer using the x11 output (with CPU doing software scaling). It depends on your CPU and screen size, of course...

Sure and you know that x11 is software scaling? With mplayer you have to use -zoom option to enable it because this kind of scaling just sucks.

Markg85 your problem is a common flaw of fglrx and kde 4, I remember read about it somewhere... I think there is nothing wrong with your configuration.

I am under kde 4.4 with desktop effects off (which aren't a big deal anyway) and all is running pretty well.

On my pc, turning vsync on, KDE 4 effects off and opengl video output on the media player = perfect video without any tearing.
