I was checking the windows driver, which usually seems to be updated a few minutes before the linux one

Well, I couldn't compile the Karmic binaries, but running the installer worked fine, and I actually get 24-bit colour graphics, and decent acceleration.

As an added bonus, I no longer see that pesky unsupported hardware logo for my Mobility Radeon HD 5730. Yeah, that could be hacked in the previous versions, but it's nice to not have to do that.

Resizing windows is still pretty sluggish, but that's not a big deal to me.

        Thanks ATI devs.

So does this one finally work with the latest xorg? http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/xserver-xorg-core seems to be up to 7.6 already.

I held back the xorg update to keep a working driver and before I upgrade xorg I'd like to know if it'll work on Debian Testing/Squeeze.

Currently im using fglrx 10.4 prerelease which works fine with xserver 1.7.6.

            Code:
             apt-cache policy fglrx-driver
            fglrx-driver:
              Installiert: 1:10-4~prerelease-1
              Kandidat: 1:10-4~prerelease-1
              Versions-Tabelle:
             *** 1:10-4~prerelease-1 0
                    800 http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/non-free Packages
                    100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
                 1:10-3~prerelease-3 0
                    990 http://ftp.de.debian.org testing/non-free Packages
            Code:
            apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core
            xserver-xorg-core:
              Installiert: 2:1.7.6-2
              Kandidat: 2:1.7.6-2
              Versions-Tabelle:
                 2:1.7.6.901-3 0
                    800 http://ftp.de.debian.org unstable/main Packages
             *** 2:1.7.6-2 0
                    990 http://ftp.de.debian.org testing/main Packages
                    100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
Since the releasenotes mention ubuntu 10.4 i guess its not a problem. I?m still waiting for the driver to land in the debian repos.

Well, it turns out this driver is not so great after all...it works for most things, as expected...until I try maximizing flash video. Then it's basically unusable. The video freezes up every second or so, and when it's not frozen, it's about showing 10 frames per second at best.

I've tried turning acceleration up/down in amdcccle, and enabling/disabling hw acceleration in the flash plugin.

Unless anyone can suggest what I should try, I may have to revert back to the 16-bit graphics with whatever fglrx version is in the karmic repos. It looks pretty crappy for any video/images with low contrast, but it works at least.

same here, both with fglrx and with nvidia. That's adobe flash for you

Aren't we lucky that works nice and fast with the open drivers. :3

I suppose...that is, if you have a graphics device that is currently supported by the open drivers. :/

Until the mobility radeon hd 5000 series is supported, I'm S.O.L.
