What is the situation about kernel low latency on Linux?

UbuntuStudio has a kernel low latency while in general the distro use a "traditional" kernel.

If the kernel low latency have better feautures whey they aren't the default kernel on Linux distro?

Is there some reason for this situation?

Is it really true that from kernel 2.6.31 isn't strictly necessary anymore?

Increasing latency generally incurs a cost in throughput. That is the tradeoff.

Also, having high resolution timers and such increases power consumption. The default kernel is fine for a general case. If you really need a rt kernel, it's not that difficult to select one
