    Ok, well that card (68c1) is enabled in the fglrx driver since 9-9 at least (did not check older drivers). Did it never work?

      Never worked in Ubuntu 10.4 to say the least (only got the laptop some weeks ago and never tried anything beside that).

        That's clear, but using Kanotix (or U 9.10 if you prefer) you could use much older drivers too.

          I've upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04, deinstalled the fglrx driver from 9.10 and installed the new driver from the repos of 10.04 but it seems that the new driver doesn't want to work.

          I'm playing a few games (Heroes of Newerth, bloodfrontier...) and they just won't work. HoN just crashes without an error in the logfile and bloodfrontier does the same.

          lsmod says that fglrx is up and running, same goes for fglrxinfo.

          Weird...

          oh, my graphiccard is a Radeon HD5870 which worked nice in 9.10 with latest AMD drivers

            Just tried to start alien-arena and I'm getting this on terminal
            Code:
            ^1...GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not found
            X Error of failed request: GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest
              Major opcode of failed request: 159 (GLX)
              Minor opcode of failed request: 17 (X_GLXVendorPrivateWithReply)
              Serial number of failed request: 57
              Current serial number in output stream: 57
            AL lib: ALc.c:1874: exit(): closing 1 Device
            AL lib: ALc.c:1798: alcCloseDevice(): destroying 1 Context(s)
            AL lib: ALc.c:1394: alcDestroyContext(): deleting 128 Source(s)
            AL lib: ALc.c:1808: alcCloseDevice(): deleting 256 Buffer(s)
            google gives only old results (2007).

              ah, I've found something
              Code:
              (WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
              (EE) RADEON(0): Acceleration initialization failed
              (II) RADEON(0): Acceleration disabled
              found it in the Xorg.0.log.

              Is the driver not ready yet?
