  • GTX 470, 295 or 285...?

    Hello all,

I'm planing to upgrade the aging 9800GTX GPU on my brand new L5530 Dev workstation (sig below)
I've got a couple of options:
    1. Buy a brand new GTX 470.
    2. Buy a used/semi-new GTX 295.
    3. Buy a used/semi-new GTX 285.
    4. ATI 5850/70.

I've got a 1050w PSU, so power should not be a problem. (According to my APC UPS, the machine eats ~370w while running a number of VM's + seti@home + compiling code and ~350w while running games [w/ seti@home down]), so I can spare at least 250w for the new GPU. (The APC UPS is a 1000KVA unit which is rated at ~600w).

I'm using Fedora 12 (and most likely we'll be switching to F13 once it hits RC) so, options 4 (ATI), while technically (performance, power usage) the best options, should be dropped. (ATI tends to ignore current X.org releases and follow Ubuntu instead. Even if they finally decide to support Xserver 1.7, F13 will be based around 1.8).

In general, the only game that I play regularly (when I have some free time...), is X3/R (LGP) and TOC (UT2K4 mod). I also plan to revisit [...] Doom3 once I get a new bigger monitor (30"?) and GPU.

    A couple of questions:
    - Anyone using the 295? How noisy is it? How's the performance under Linux? (I only found Windows benchmarks.)
    - How about the 285? (Assuming that I can find one)

    Any other suggestions?

    - Gilboa

I would not get dual gpu cards. If power consumption/money is no problem test the gtx 470. Maybe future games with Unigine engine will run better there. Hopefully there will be soon a 2.1 version with OpenGL 4 support to test tessellation with the new gtx 470/480.

In many ways the 470 is the best option... Though:
      A. Being an early adopter tends to bite people in the *ss.
      B. The 470 is hot and noisy. Not as bad as the 480, but far too close for comfort.

As for the 295, anyone here tested it? (At least under Windows, it gives 480-like performance and power consumption at a lower price.

The stupid 1m limitation is annoying!

        ...
As for the 295, has anyone here tested it? (At least under Windows, it gives 480-like performance and power consumption at a lower price - especially once all the crazy people start duping them in-favor the 480 SLI and 5970)

Well thats only a DX10 card and SLI/MulitCore is overrated in most cases.

Well if it's DX10 hardly matters if you're only going to be using opengl on it.

If you want to use Tesselation with OpenGL 4 you need such a card - if not it does not matter.

                True.
But I wonder if by the time we'll actually see any games that employ tesselation under Linux, both nVidia and ATI will already be shipping their 2'nd or even 3'rd generation cards.

Well Unigine engine based games most likely, even on Linux as soon as version 2.1 will be out with the Heaven benchmark - which can be used interactively too. Currently you need ATI hardware to test tessellation but thats slow as hell, about 75% performance loss.

... And given that fact that 90% of the hardware out there won't be capable of using tesselation in any meaningful way without going into slide-show mode, at least for now, DX11/OGL4 features are less attractive.

I'm thinking about adding another option: Buying two GTX260/216 or GTX275 cards and using them in SLI mode.
At least in the case of the 260, the performance should be better than the 470, at a lower price and somewhat lower power draw.
