Also, do you know how the new page flipping control would deal with video? If you could point me to a resource that would be great since I've found precious little about what the scope of the pageflipping control is supposed to be.

      Thanks,
      Liam

R700: unable to make UMS work on Lucid

        hi,

I've upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 this we. I gave a try to new oss radeon driver. As I understood, it uses kms by default, but ums is working faster (for the moment).
I tried some wine application, it started in kms mode, but was very laggy. So I tried in ums mode, and wine did not even start!! I don't have the error message here...
I also tried to upgrade to latest mesa with xorg-edgers ppa. It did not work better.

Did someone have the radeon oss working on some r700 card ?

False, KMS is quicker with latest graphic stack (xorg-edgers ppa?)

            Which wine app?

Anything that requires FBOs won't work in UMS. Anything that requires OpenGL 2, basically.

The lagginess under Wine can have a number of causes (software fallbacks for OpenGL 2+, Wine not detecting the driver correctly and using only software), but keep in mind that the OSS drivers, while providing 3d acceleration that's decent, are not ultra-fast at this point.

civ4... the only non opensource game I play
I kept Win XP for a long time for this game... and since 2 years I keep fglrx for this game too

That's DirectX 9, which means it's likely that it uses some functionality which requires KMS.

UMS only goes up to OpenGL 1.5.

So I guess, I'll keep fglrx for the next 6 months at least...
except if the xorg-edgers ppa is getting more stable.

Looks like there might be somebody working on r300g with the specific intent on getting Civ4 working:

Civ4 has fixed function fall back (dx8 mode) too. That can run with GL 1.3 even.
