With Ubuntu 10.04 basing off the Linux 2.6.32 kernel and this distribution release being a Long-Term Support (LTS) release that will be maintained longer than normal Ubuntu releases -- and other vendors using the Linux 2.6.32 kernel for their enterprise updates too -- this kernel will live on longer as well. Greg Kroah-Hartman has announced that the Linux 2.6.32 kernel stable tree will be a "long-term" stable release that should be maintained for two to three years. This stable branch should live on as long as a flow of stable, back-ported patches continue to arrive in Greg's email inbox...

Actually it's because multiple distros are using 2.6.32 _NOT_ because Ubuntu is using it

It's just sad to see such "news" between otherwise quite good and valuable reports about drivers and graphics.

Yeah sure, the most important Linux distro there ever was gets more mention. Very sad. No, I use Gentoo, not Ubuntu, and find this perfectly normal *and* totally acceptable.

Seriously, this just plain wrong criticism. Ubuntu is synonymous to Linux today, there's nothing wrong with the Linux pop-world circling around it.

That's equivalent of using "Toyota" as a synonym for "vehicle". Inaccurate and mis-representative.

Doesn't matter. Ubuntu still is the "Linux for the masses". Getting more mention in Phoronix (and everywhere else) is normal. But some people just can't grasp that.

Says Ubuntu. It still has no indicator of where the true development lies. It would be just as mis-representative to say "Novell says 2.6.32 is a longer support kernel." because Greg KH made the announcement.

You wouldn't use apt-get as a substitute for "package manager."

You wouldn't use "Xbox Live" as a substitute for "online gaming."

You wouldn't use "Panasonic" for a substitute to "flat panel tv."

What you could use "Ubuntu" as for reasonable substitute for is "linux marketing".

Brand tagging should only be used on brand specific items.

It's the most widely used Linux for desktop PCs and thus concerns most people.

Whether "using apt-get as a substitute for package manager" is right or wrong, or if there's no indicator of where the true development lies, is irrelevant. Ubuntu is synonymous to Linux with most people, and many don't even know Linux but know Ubuntu instead. That's the way it is, and whether we have your personal agreement on that situation or not really doesn't make any difference.

I don't really like Ubuntu either (even though I end up installing it on people's PCs all the time since it's the only distro I know that will work OK for them out of the box and they will grasp how to use it; I guess that explains its popularity), but blaming Phoronix for being somewhat Ubuntu centric? That is wrong too.
