R500 KMS console: getting a stable picture?

I have big constant "waves" in my KMS console. Since UMS X should be using the same mode, given by the screen in EDID, I wonder why this is. UMS X has a stable, good-looking picture.

It's a VGA LCD, and messing with the screen's controls do nothing.

I've had basically the opposite problem with an RV620 (KMS console works great at native res and 75Hz, both KMS and non-KMS X set a non-working native-res 75Hz mode), so I don't think the console and X drivers go about setting the display mode in quite the same way.
