  • PBM: Linux machine freeze with nVidia drivers >173

    Hi all.

It's been several months I'm experiencing complete system freeze with nVidia drivers on my Gentoo machine. I've tried drivers above 173.14.22 and all of them make the system freeze as soon as X starts. The screen turns black, no image, goes power saving and I have to hard reset the computer as it cannot even be reached from the network.

Here are the first and last lines of Xorg log file:

My machine has an ASUS P5QL Pro motherboard and, as you can see, a GeForce 8800 GT. Has anyone got a possible explanation?

    Thanks in advance.

Maybe a kernel error. Nv works fine on my systems.

Thanks. I'm open to any suggestion but how could I check that? (Note I'm not using nv but nvidia, the proprietary drivers.) Also note the problem also occurs with Ubuntu 9.10 and nvidia-drivers-180* so it's not Gentoo-specific.

There are 195.30 (beta) and 190.53 (stable) drivers out there, i do not test outdated drivers.

I know that. The problem is they make my system freeze. Do you have anything to share that would help me find and fix the problem, please?

Hmmm... looks like some people who are having the same problem disabled hardware acceleration to fix the freeze... I'll try it too so let's see.
