I've been reading the benchmark results of different unix flavors and have come to the conclusion that they provide very little useful information on general operating system performance. The Phoronix test suite is great but I would like to see something more than micro benchmarks.
Couldn't Phoronix do a benchmark comparing the overall performance and scalability between Ubuntu server, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenSolaris running a web server like apache/lighthttpd and database software like MySQL & Postgresql etc
I suspect a benchmark like this would yield some results that would be the most interesting considering the fact that UNIX's real use is in servers, not desktops.
