Ah well, at least VLC will integrate nicely with my KDE4 desktop

Kaffiene is still in alpha - and this is a LTS release. That was the reasoning I think.

Karmic is not a LTS release. 10.04 is the next LTS release.

I too recommend SMPlayer for video playback also the new Amarok 2.2 ROCKS! For audio of course :P
