  • x1650 pro - should I upgrade?

I have a x1650 pro (R500?) which is finally working alright on ubuntu 8.10.

What will happen if I upgrade to ubuntu 9.4 Jaunty?

I watch a lot of films so accelerated xvideo is important to me. Working xv in compiz would be nice to. Should I stick where I am or upgrade?

    Thanks

Are you using fglrx or the open drivers right now ?

Sorry forgot that bit, I'm on fglrx 9-3 and have been keeping up to date with them for the last year or so.

I have my PC connected to a tv with an s-video cable so use big desktop (but would rather have independant displays, not that thats really relevant)

If all you do is watch movies and the like, give the open source drivers a test run; if they perform adequately for your needs I say stick with what you got.

Can you output to a second screen/tv? (idieally an independant display, that recognises the TVs low resolution and displays video correctly).

If I upgraded to Jaunty, would I have to give up on FGLRX?

My main concern right now would be TV out; the devs are still trying to get that working on all systems. I believe 5xx was not working all that well, although both older and newer chips were better.

Dual screens and accelerated Xv under Compiz should be no problem.

                Yes.

fglrx not work in jaunty for cards<=R500.

You should use open drivers "ati" or "radeonHD" with you card work well. 3D is slow with this drivers but 2D for example in driver "radeonHD" work faster than fglrx.
