Can't wait to get home and try this one out!

I heard Nexuiz change resolution crash is fixed.
Ahh... I was wondering about that but hadn't looked into it.
I just chalked it up to usual fglrx bugginess, there's always different things that break with each release. But overall the drivers in much better shape than it was 18 months ago, so thanks ATI!

Well, this seems to be the first fglrx release that is giving me trouble. It's failing to install and gives me this via dmesg:

      fglrx: Unknown symbol pci_disable_msi
      fglrx: Unknown symbol pci_enable_msi

I'm running 2.6.28.2. Does this even support 2.6.28?

Sure, but not with your config.

Could you elaborate? What would cause this to not work for the first time?

Oh come on I can't hear it anymore

Nvidia is releasing a great driver (I just switched from Geforce 7600GT -> Radeon 4850) - almost everyone complains (for those where it works - no posts )

AMD/ATI is releasing a MUCH improved driver and only those (few ???) where it doesn't run - literally throwing everything they have against that company

the result at some point will be that you piss off their efforts and they (hopefully NOT) stop developing great drivers for linux

so here you have it AMD/ATI:

thank you very much for this driver release ! -

please keep on trying to offer (and providing) the BEST experience to your customers

                first:

there are some advantages compared to nvidia with this driver:
                - it seems to support nice PAT, the module or a part of it can be compiled as PIE

                second:

composite AND video playback work pretty nice, at least for me (Radeon 4850)

it's seemingly not as nice as with nvidia yet but it greatly improves with every new driver release

I can see clearly: in a few months AMD has passed Nvidia

                third:

if it hardlocks for you - try disabling some unstable settings, e.g. TexturedXRender, BackingStore, ...

it very often is related to the underlying OS (often *buntu ), some settings in your xorg.conf, errors in Memory or something else in hard- or software

I'm having this card for only 2 days now so I can't really tell much more ...

! are you positive xv is being used? (4850 here too, and 2600 mobility)
are you using any xorg.conf options? distro?

how can I evaluate that it was used ?

I watched a movie with smplayer and selected xv (ATI Radeon avivo video) under Options -> Preferences

CPU load was around 25%, GPU load afaik around 40%
