"ASIC hang" with Catalyst 9.1

Shortly after updating from 8.12 to 9.1 (on Linux 2.6.28.2) I left
my Thinkpad for a while with xscreensaver running. I came back to
find a black screen and no way of getting control back. In the
system log I found:

Oh cool; looks like we're starting to get hang recovery and debugging info into fglrx.

Odd ...

I saw this problem with 8.12 on an Asus M2A-VM (IGP). Had not seen it in any version up to then on, and could find only one other reference here (someone else with the same hardware).

You probably can ssh into the machine, but the only way to kill X and get the gui back is a reboot.

Oddly, 9.1 appears to have fixed this problem for me. It introduce another odd one (mythtv with opengl painter stays in front of all other apps, so I can't watch vids with mplayer).

Amazingly, I can actually suspend with this. Cool. For me it seems to be the best version in almost a year's time.

Good luck with the ASIC hang.

OK guys I quit...
I can get neither Hybrid Crossfire to work nor Randr1.2 features here!!
The only thing I can enable not making my PC stuck at boot process when it's time for X to start is 10-bit processing feature with AMDPCSDB...

I am almost sure these problems happen cause I use Xorg 7.4 64-bit!
Look at this note at Xorg.0.log:
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.57.2
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: 8.573
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Build Date: Jan 13 2009 23:22:50
(WW) This ATI Proprietary Linux Driver does not guarantee support of video driver ABI higher than 2.0
(WW) Video driver ABI version of the X server is 4.1
Well i can't use Xorg 7.3 cause opensuse 11.1 ships with 7.4 and I don't want to use it too cause 7.3 has a huge memory leak and 7.4 is fixed.

Oh I also found out something else interesting! If anyone face problems with DRI not working at normal user mode AMDCCCLE will show you OpenGL version 1.4(2.1-8xxx) you must add at xorg.conf
Section "DRI"
Group "Video"
Mode 0666
EndSection
Restart X(login-logout) and you will have full DRI power.

I also get this, it has just started happening with 9.1. Unfortunately nothing about it is logged and I can't use scrollback to see what triggers it.

If I don't log into X, it will shutdown normally.

Thanks. For the present I've reinstalled the 8.12 Catalyst, which worked well for me; guess I'll try 9.2 when it comes out.

9.1, so far, acts just like 8.12 (Ubuntu 8.10)

--buildpkg Ubuntu/8.10

aticonfig --initial

Reboot.

I guess you could say GDM comes up, but nothing is clear. Its a very light color and I can only barely make out the input field, and everything else for that matter. I can still log in though by just blindingly putting in the username and password.

On log in, barely anything comes up. There is a 2"x2" sq. where the mouse pointer is. Right click brings up nothing. There is also a 3x3" sq. on the bottom right.

If I try to switch to a VT, the screen blinks (1 sec. intervals) various colors. Switching back, and the "desktop" screen is just as above.

Is there something special I need to add? The xorg.conf is basically generated by "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and then "aticonfig --initial".
