  • GeForce 9600 gso not recognized under Ubuntu 8.10

    Hello,

I just bought a Dell Vostro 200, and I purchased a separate Nvidia GeForce 9600 GSO graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 8.10, and I installed the graphics card myself.

Once I booted up, It doesn't even see the graphics card. I try to install the latest driver from nvidia (177, and 180 beta), and it says I don't have an nvidia card.

I put the card in the PCI slot, and I figured that Linux would at least be able to recognize it.

here's a cat of lspci and lsmod:

Any ideas as to why it isn't recognizing my card, and why I can't install the drivers?

PS - on a side note, the manual for the card said that I could get 'improved performance' by plugging in a 6-hole power cord coming from the power supply into the card. The tower does not have any more plugs coming from the power supply (all used). this isn't the only power provided to the card, right? Just thinking of why the card isn't even recognized under lspci...

    thanks in advance.

That is the reason why it is not being seen. Get a powerplug on that and it should be seen then. Your IGP is taking over as the video device seen because of it. Also make sure that in your bios it is set to look for the PCI-e card first instead of the IGP.

      Awesome, Thanks.

It seems that I'm out of powerplugs coming from the power supply. Is there a way to add another, or would I have to get another power supply (or steal a plug from another device). The desktop is new, but they didn't leave me any extra plugs...

      Thanks,

        Thanks,
There are splitter adapter that you can buy to do the job. Usually there is one supplied in with the card though. You might want to check the box contents.

Thanks all for the responses. Looks like that powerplug connector is my issue. That's why it's not showing up in the OS.

I didn't receive the powerplug in the box, so I'll get one tomorrow.

          Again, thanks for the help.
