  • black screen on startup 8.11 drivers

I am using Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit, a new install, and was following these instructions on installing the 8.11 ATI driver:

All seemed to go well, and then upon restarting, I received a black login screen. This is the contents of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. Please help.

I see 2 problems and a possible fix:

    Code:
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
    Code:
    dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol: miZeroLineScreenIndex
this means it is not detecting your X server version correctly, and is building for an older version.

    from wiki page you cited:
    Code:
Please note that for the current version 8.11 of the catalyst drivers, this method of installing with deb packages is broken in intrepid. Use the automated installation method instead.*

The current build script included will not work with 8-11. You can try (not yet verified):

I fixed it, but did not try with U yet. Best look if it selects the intrepid target.

I tried this script, but I get errors. What could be wrong? Here is the top of the log, it is too long to post the entire thing.

Well, building debs doesn't work for me, but :
            Code:
            sudo ./ati-driver-installer-8-11-x86.x86_64.run --install
works fine, although it's not the cleanest method around.
