  • glxgears faster with powersave mode

    Hi,

I know glxgears is not a benchmark, but this behaviour feels strange.
Running Ubuntu 8.10 and fglrx on a radeon hd 3430 and playing with cpu throttling modes, I get :

    with powersave mode:
    15623 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3124.463 FPS
    15640 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3127.870 FPS
    15625 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3124.844 FPS
    cpu load is 16%

    with performance mode:
    4978 frames in 5.0 seconds = 995.586 FPS
    5002 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.375 FPS
    5001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.199 FPS
    cpu load is 97%

so I get three times less performance using a supposedly powersaving mode. Does anybody know why? It's not a problem, just curiosity though...

Well, like you said glxgears is not a benchmark. If you think something is actually wrong, then it might be a good idea to run some of the phoronix test suite benchmarks on it to see if you can duplicate the problem using real benches.

is it possible that while you tested it in performance mode, something else was running.
Seems odd that you would have 97% load from glxgears

Funny thing is when I just tested it, my cpu load was <5%, but if i moved my mouse it jumped to 50% (100% on one core). once I stopped moving my mouse it went back down.
