another work around:
run program in windowed mode, without border, at desired resolution
with wine, this requires an additional step:
enable 'emulate desktop' at the desired resolution
set actual resolution larger than you want
start program
set actual resolution to desired size
this has the additional benefit that you can alt-tab out
