  • HD3850 Lockup

    Im having problems with a HD3850 AGP that locks up in both 2D and 3D when working on the computer. If I just let it run it doesn't hang. Figured it could be a PSU problem I ran the HD3850 off an second 450w psu dedicated to the graphicscard without luck. Runs Windows XP fine and 3DMark 06 fine without any lockups.

    Lockup almost instantly if I open a couple of tabs in FireFox 3 and drag the whole window. Sometimes it locksup and the monitor goes to sleep and sometimes it just freezes the computer with the Desktop visible.

    Doom3, Quake 4 and ETQW runs OK until it freezes under CentOS (5-15minutes usually)
    xorg.conf configured with aticonfig --initial. No special options at all.

    Tested booting with NOPAT without any luck.

    Any people with ATI HD38xx and this kind of problems ?
    Will testrun a few games under Windows later today and get back with the results.

    Computer Specs
    CentOS 5.2
    P4 2.53GHz
    768MB RAM
    Promise SATA 300 TX4 with 2x1TB Seagate
    Radeon HD3850 512MB AGP
    Catalyst 8.8 (Same problems with Catalyst 8.7)

    Heat maybe? Check the heatsink(s) and point a desk fan at the open case.

          I got 2 VPU recovers while I played Quake 4 in XP. But I had to go up to 1680x1050 with 4xAA High to make it crash. So it's not related only to Linux.

          Have ordered a new PSU.

            I have a HD3850 AGP but my pciid is 9515 - don't know if that makes any difference or not. AGP could also be different with different mobos, you could try forcing 4x if it's at 8x.

            Don't have quake4 in windows, but get a reliable BSOD with the hl2 mod insurgency and the canyon flight part of 3dmark06 using the 8.7 or 8.8 agp hotfix drivers. 8.6 work OK.

            Haven't seen any crashes in Linux ET:QW, nexuiz, openarena based games Wolf:ET, demos - UT2004, quake4 etc. Maybe that's because I never test/play with FSAA.

            Edit. forgot the tempratures - mine is 47 idle, but 85 fully loaded - it cools really quickly after load is removed so I would never see that without a script to poll every 10 secs.

              My pciid is 9505. As far as im aware there is 2 bios versions released by ATI for the 3850 AGP. The first one uses pciid 9515 and needs the agp hotfix in windows and the latest changed the pciid to 9505. I flashed my card to see if there was any improvements beside the pciid change but I still got the same problems. Both pciids works under Linux. It's just that you need the hotfix under windows if you are running the first version of the ati bios.

              AGP could also be different with different mobos, you could try forcing 4x if it's at 8x.
              Im already running at AGP 4x as this is the supported max speed.

              Don't have quake4 in windows, but get a reliable BSOD with the hl2 mod insurgency and the canyon flight part of 3dmark06 using the 8.7 or 8.8 agp hotfix drivers. 8.6 work OK.                 If 4x is max then maybe forcing 2x would help. It does seem like it's stable(ish) in windows but not Linux, maybe smartgart is doing something that fglrx isn't.

                  According to SmartGart in XP it is running in AGP 4x with everything on (Fastwrites etc. ) I don't think I will get the PSU this week but will post more info here when I do.
