did i miss something, or have they forgotten to release 5.0 after 4.9, before they start getting all excited over 5.1?

It was all explained in the earlier RC article... GCC 5.0 was just the version while in development. They have a (odd) new versioning scheme. GCC 5.x will be point releases, GCC 6.0 is now the current SVN/Git code, and GCC 6.1 will start the next stable major release series.

Why anyone would adopt such a versioning scheme is beyond me...especially after all the ire Firefox has drawn over their version-bump-palolooza.

It makes it possible to have the right major number on prereleases instead of silly things like 4.9.x or 4.99, and similar
