  • Free Engineer - easy tool to install games with free engine.

    Hi everyone,

I am writing to introduce new Ubuntu app.
There are many games which were never released on Linux, but their engine code is now free. Free Engineer project is here to make it easy for you to play those games in Ubuntu.

All the gamer needs to do is install free-engineer app from repository:
This is the build server page for the Recultis Legacy project (version 1.2). Please do not add it to your repositories. This server uses Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr as a build platform Recultis source is available at: https://gitlab.com/makson/Recultis Current build server: https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/ubuntu/recultis

run it and choose the game to install.

The app will download games engines (which are also present in repository) and the game content from game distribution platform. What is more, the game engines will get frequent updates as their development by community progress.

Initially Jedi Knights: Jedi Academy and Steam platform is supported. Repository is for Ubuntu 14.04.

    Browse screen-shots gallery:

    or watch this youtube video:

    to see how it works.

Of course you can just use command line:
    Code:
    sudo sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/free-engine
    sudo apt-get install free-engineer
Share your view and tell me which game would you like to see next:
    Aliens vs Predator (Redux?)
    Baldur's Gate 2
    Elderscrolls 3: Morrowind
    or maybe something else.

    Best regards,

I didn't test these games, but I noticed that OpenRaider (Tomb Raider) is still actively developed by somebody:

          Right now my app supports:

          Jedi Knights: Jedi Accademy
          Aliens vs Predator 2000 Classic
          Doom 3 BFG

I am working now on Morrowind. Tomb Raider will be next then.

          Best regards,

Someone posted other suggestions about your project:

"VCMI and other games via GOG would be cool.

Maybe Descent 1&2 as well as the Freespace2 source projects?"

Hi I want to inform you that Makson from ubuntu.pl created the proj - Forum post on GamingOnLinux.com

Personally, I think that Openage (Age of Empires II) is a great project:

Free (as in freedom) open source clone of the Age of Empires II engine :rocket: - SFTtech/openage

                @makson

Basically D3 BFG works but you can not see any cutscenes with rbdoom 3 bfg. So maybe not that optimal, the original engine replacement dhem3 works with cutscenes, but informer not well with the addon (the hook did not work). I would just use wine for d3 bfg.

Adding GOG support should be doable through lgogdownloader:
LGOGDownloader is unofficial downloader to GOG.com for Linux users. It uses the same API as the official GOG Galaxy. - Sude-/lgogdownloader

I will add your game suggestions to my list.

If I would like to play Age of Empires game, I would choose 0 AD rather then Openage, but Openage is of course valid target for my app.

Someone posted other suggestions about your project:
                  Where did she/he post it?

                  @Kano
Have you tested it yourself? Because cutscenes are working fine for me on rbdoom-3-bfg. Also this engine adds cool graphic features:
Phoronix, Linux Hardware Reviews, Linux hardware benchmarks, Linux server benchmarks, Linux benchmarking, Desktop Linux, Linux performance, Open Source graphics, Linux How To, Ubuntu benchmarks, Ubuntu hardware, Phoronix Test Suite

so it seems to me that is far better choice then wine.
