It really depends on your workflow. Desktop environment really doesn't matter that much. For paid work I use something which fails to properly notify me for meetings. It's really utterly fails in doing this. This while everyone uses it.

Meaning: what works great for you might be terrible for someone else and vice versa.

I wonder if Linus Torvalds and what he does counts as "serious work" . Though he haves strange taste and IIRC he yells about lack of adequate DE periodically, so it looks like if he isn't huge fan of Gnome...
