    Epic Games released Unreal Engine 4.5 yesterday and the improvements are looking great for this Linux friendly game engine...

      Real-time shadows using ray-tracing techniques is something I've not seen in other engines. The video demonstrates this specific function. The environment is from a game called Fortnite, which has a cartoonish and thus unrealistic art-style.

        One thing that is a bit unfortunate is that there's a bug in NVIDIA 340 drivers that causes excessive bloom and weird colours, if a certain visual feature isn't manually disabled. NVIDIA doesn't seem to care a whole lot about it: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/t...with-343-13/2/

          Still waiting for an official release of the editor for linux though. It sure isn't easy to follow the "write games, not engines" philosophy when there are no good engines to use.

            Oh, there sure are.

            Writing engines still has an use when no engines do what you want (eg. Minecraft-style games 3-4 years ago).

                Not sure I know what you mean there. Of course custom engines lend themselves to procudural content. But I'd imagine (only been doing this for a few months) that working with a nice SDK would make content creation far, far easier. I've been working on my own engine (https://launchpad.net/sqee) but I'd like to see what working with something like unreal is like.

                    Running on Arch

                    Got it running under Archlinux, compiled from sources with one command.

                    Im part of the student program, so its free for me. Its very nice, only crashes when I create projects from templates, than I restart, and it works again, didnt crash yet under normal execution, but when it does, systemd creates a 6 GB (!!) coredump file.



                    Archlinux or systemd should fix this mess... #systemd says its archlinux fault, because they not limit it, even systemd ships this unlimited config by default.

                    If you need help, check #UE4LINUX on Freenode IRC, even Epic games people are there.
