Isn't LLVM the cool new kind in the block? Why would anyone care about GCC?

A lot of people do think that, hence all the recent improvements to GCC as a counter-action.

Indeed competition has been the best that could happen to GCC. Before clang, development was a huge inertia with companies like Apple pushing their own agenda and the maintainers trying to block them, now they have to try to cope against a superior design and they will receive contributions from anyone.

Very sadly contributing to GCC is not easy: the code is an unmanageable mess and you have to sign paperwork to get your contribution considered. And then there's the grumpy man with the political agenda. Huge spendage of time and energy, clang is the future.

the most superior aspect of clang compared to gcc is not design, but implementation language. which is slowly changing
