This kid had big ambitions, no problems, but obviously was going to fail due to the lack of understanding as to how the mainstream audience works. People hate change, but only because of familiarity with a brand or term such as "Microsoft" or "Windows". OS U did almost everything wrong like Linux Mint currently does with its catering to enthusiasts, while looking like it's a "beginner-friendly" GNU/Linux distro, which it isn't.
The problem people here have with it is because its vapour wear. I'm all for this type of project but they needed to at least have started a prototype before asking for money. Anyone with any experience could see it would take a lot more money to do what they were planning as they were planning on hiring external dev's for the wayland stuff.

$50,000 is a lot to ask when you haven't even really started anything. It only takes a couple of bad projects before people stop opening their wallets. The fact they are just giving up shows a lot, while 50,000 is a lot it would still have taken them many hours of free work to produce something.

There should be an award for exceptional stupidity. And whoever pledged even a penny to this "project" deserves to be nominated.

So, does this mean that Phoronix will stop coverage of this stupid project? About time.

It's not about being dicks or the "mainstream audience" not liking it.

Opensource enables you to do what you dream of in your corner, building off an excelent base that the community provides. And then you show your ideas, and then we decide.

His proposal was money-first, and while the end goals were ok, the technical part was absolutely lacking, and if you've been around phoronix for long you know the proposal was very unreal.

Finally, just giving up instead of just going for a slower in-my-free-time open development just shows that they didn't have enough passion for it. I mean we all would love for oss to be our dayjob, but it's not gotten there quite yet, and this was a quick and not very planned or good grab at it, and had it failed after getting funded it would help to descredit future projects.

TL;DR: It's all fun and games until you ask for other people's money.

It may be dickish to make fun of the obvious, but OS U had no chance of succeeding. The "project" didn't have anything substantial to show to make it an an acceptable risk to give money on kickstarter. They had a website, a lot of unrealistic goals, like MATE on Wayland (MATE itself hasn't begun writing a Wayland compositor yet), an aspiration for an OEM hardware business and some pretty spreadsheets on Google Drive.

If this project had seriously pursued the business they envisioned, they would have at least had a Manjaro respin with their own branding (in the bootsplash and wallpaper) and MATE running a top of good old X.org, with a prototype of their new menu system included. That would have at least given us a reason to trust these guys delivering on a distro.

This project was bound to fail in a epic way. I seriously thought this project was a big joke.
Even IF they would have succeeded to bring in the money, they would have failed anyhow.

Arch, Wayland, MATE? lol. Give me a break man.
This already shows they have no knowledge about Linux nor wayland in its current state.
