  • Radeon HD5670 and Ubuntu 14.04

    Hello,

i trying to get my Radeon HD5670 to run under Ubuntu 14.04.

    Here are my System Specs:

    Code:
    AMD64 X2 Dual Core 6400+
    Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe/Wireless Edition
    6 GIG Ram DDR2
    ATI Radeon HD 5670
The opensource driver works, and i can even play games with it, but it feels kind of laggy. Im sure there is much more potential in this card. I heard that you should use the offical ATI drivers when you want to play games on your Linux machine. So i did and got terrible performance.

First i thought i installed something wrong, but after a full week of reinstalls and using other tutorials im sure i didnt do anything wrong.

    When i type
    Code:
    lsmod | grep fglrx
in a terminal, i get this output
    Code:
    display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 5670
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12798 Compatibility Profile Context 13.35.1005
So the Driver is definitely installed and acitvated, but even the Desktop is very slow compared to the openSource Driver.
When playing Left 4 Dead 2, even on low settings it stutters and lags.

Hope you Guys can help me out here

2D performance is generally a bit lower than with the opensource driver. Regarding 3D/games, you should profit from a newer driver.

    Download the driver here:

and extract it. Open a terminal (Strg+Alt+T), navigate to the folder of the driver you extracted, and type:

    sudo apt-get -y install debhelper dh-modaliases xserver-xorg-dev
    chmod +x amd-driver-installer-14.20-x86.x86_64.run
    ./amd-driver-installer-14.20-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/trusty
    ##### wait a few minutes #####
    sudo dpkg -i *.deb
    sudo apt-get -fy install

Reboot. It is likely that "fglrxinfo" will still report the old driver version (there is a way to fix it reporting the wrong version, but that is not really important), but you should be good to go.

Maybe try "dmesg | grep fglrx" and see the date of the kernel module.

okey i installed the newest beta driver with your instruction. After the reboot, i wanted to check the performance with glmark2. during this test, the pc froze :/ Didnt do that with the open source driver.

After a second reboot i tried a to start left 4 dead 2, and again the pc froze. :/ Okey, PC freezes even when doing nothing after a couple of minutes.
Damn, how can i fix this now?

        Code:
        dpkg -l | grep fglrx
        glxinfo | grep OpenGL
Post the result. I am using Sapphire HD 5670 512 MB RAM. I can play TF2, Left 4 Dead 2 (slight lag, but playable).

isnt the HD5XXX series working good on opensource drivers?
if your on ubuntu 14.04 your probaly stuck using an old kernel + mesa, i would try installing

          linux 3.16:
LinuxG Casino The Ultimate Guide to the Online Casino India 2023 LinuxG Casino stands as the foremost independent online gaming authority globally,

          and xorg edgers ppa:

if you still feel like the performance isnt enough using the latest opensource then and only then i would try to install the closed source one only as a last resourt.
the closed soucre drivers sucks its buggy and poor 2D performance :C

Nice, i too want to replace my HD 5670 with GTX 750. Which games you play ?

I am waiting of for NVIDA to release new GPU this month, if they have an affordable GPU i will get that or get a GTX 750 (or gTX 760, i don't need power hungry GPU), anyway with GPU release, price will go down for other GPUs.

Catalyst driver suxx for sure. On other hand, opensource driver does works quite decent on HD5xxx series these days. Especially if you use things like oibaf PPA.

oibaf PPA, i don't see much performance improvement. I tried it yesterday with different Ubuntu kernels. 3.14 and 3.16, glmark2 have almost same result. So i switched back to stock Ubuntu 14.04. Look like default open source driver with ubuntu is almost same for HD 5xxx cards and everyone working on newer cards. May be oibaf PPA give better performance for HD 7xxx or latest R7/R9 cards.

My HD 5670 glmark2 benchmark results

Radeon open source oibaf-ppa and Kernel 3.16 glmark2 Score: 1221
Radeon open source oibaf-ppa and Kernel 3.14 glmark2 Score: 1311
Radeon open source default ubuntu kernel + driver glmark2 Score: 1306
