The stock upstream LibreSSL relies on features and OS behavior that NetBSD does not have or have not implemented; so yes it does need a portable version.

Went ahead and tried building the portable release on NetBSD 6.1. Is almost perfect except needed CFLAGS+="-Wno-error=array-bounds" for a couple of source files.

I would would stay away from LibreSSL. OpenSSL is still much safer (proven, secure and well established).

My company is planning to ban LibreSSL as it will become a costly security liability.
