Phoronix: GTK+ Support Moves Along For Unity 8 On Mir

Canonical developers have been making progress on allowing GTK+ applications to work natively atop Ubuntu's Unity 8 desktop with the Mir display server in place of the X.Org Server or even XMir for that matter...

    Wayland

Wayland already does this and more.

    I want Wayland, not Mir.

Distro specific patches should be maintained by the distro. Otherwise you'll have a clusterfuck of code.

Honestly, the attitude towards Mir on Phoronix is irritating :/

Derailing a thread's topic has become a standard classic for anything Mir-concerned. We've got it, you guys are pissed off about Mir, thus move on, find another thread that interests you and comment on it. I usually read the news on the main page, and only sometimes I check the forums for more info, details, or just to read something beneficial that may teach me something new, yet whenever I land here all I see is crap and people whining about Mir and weeping about Wayland!

Think of it this way, Wayland is superior, Wayland does what Mir does and more already, Wayland is supported by Intel/RedHat/Gnome/KDE/Tizen and you name it, Wayland is the future, Wayland is dominating, Mir is insignificant, hence NO NEED FOR GOD'S SAKE TO MESS UP MIR'S NEWS ALL THE TIME ON THIS BOARD.

(I'm not a spokesman of Canonical, but I see that it's hated because of its percentage in the desktop marketshare, as not a single other company can reach that level of theirs, and that's what matters for NVIDIA/AMD or the other companies)

If Canonical developers are putting their time, money, and resources on a product they believe in, then this is all what Freedom is about, it's about the freedom of choice, and it has nothing to do with fragmenting the Linux Desktop as some people claim, because Linux wasn't meant for a Desktop utilization from the beginning, and I recall very well that Linus Torvalds praised Android for bringing Linux to the Smart Phone market, and Ubuntu for the Desktop one and making Debian useable, I saw it on a YT Vid somewhere in the not long ago past.

Mark Shuttleworth had a vision and he's working on it to make it a reality, and he has never settled for the agreed upon norms, even when they imposed Compiz as the default compositor, and even when they introduced Unity, since they found none did work for their vision using Gnome, KDE, XFCE, LXDE and you name it one more time. And I have to point that they stated once upon a time that "Ubuntu is no democracy", and honestly that had worked for companies and organizations since the man came to this planet, because satisfying everybody is unreal; in fact, it is what destroys any company's future. However, Canonical does listen to their clients to an extent. For example, when people whined about the slowness of Compiz, they hired Compiz main developer to fix the issues concerned, then they started providing a fall-back in case the GPU can't provide the necessary acceleration, then a Qt/QML was addressed, then a whole re-write started taking place and so on...etc

The point is, spare us from the nonsense of We Don't Want MIR, just move on and get on something that interests you.

Finally, the fragmentation is a human nature, Gnome-GTK Vs KDE-Qt (anybody recalls the newsletters' wars?), Nouveau-Mesa-Gallium3D Vs NVIDIA-CATALYST, Quebec Vs Canada, Ireland-Scotland Vs UK, Crimea Vs Ukraine, South Korea Vs North Korea (Who's Goryeo's real heir?), Communism-Socialism Vs Capitalism-Imperialism...etc

Look at the bigger picture, fragmentation is how humanity has survived for thousands if not millions of years, and each camp claims they just want to impose their standards because they're superior and better for the other people. STOP IT, LIVE WITH IT, AND EMBRACE WHAT YOU LIKE BETTER. Provide your statment objectively and rationally on the suitable threads/forums, and write you ranting on your own personal blogs. (End of story)

Though uid313 is already on my ignore list I am still forced to read his bullshit in quotes. I would have made the answer much shorter: You don't want Mir? THEN DON'T FUCKING USE UBUNTU!

Yep, you're entirely right - Mir most definitely will never be used anywhere besides Ubuntu.

Ubuntu was and will still be a POS so Mir won't be the deciding factor in not using Ubuntu.
