What the hell?.. Make every release a long-term release?.. Is there some thing I am missing here?..

You can call it 3+2(?) years . That Long Term Support is extended or better to say extendible support period, because it depends on varios factors, but mostly that depends on independently dependant supported support - so depending on how these things goes that can be 2 years more or Zero years more .

If the squeeze LTS effort can be maintained for 2 years, Jessie should have been released by then but be still be early in its regular support lifecycle. Wheezy would be reaching its regular support EOL around that time though so people working on LTS could swap over to that. They would have nothing to do otherwise!

It's explained really well by this:

The advantage to business is that you could jump forward two releases at a time, half as often. (Some people do that anyway even without security support... and I really should replace that etch server now).

Well given that the Debian "Stable" release are released at the speed of a glacier, it's almost already an LTS :-D
