32-PAE vs 6B, but with 8 or 16 GB of memory?

Guessing - but it seems that 32-PAE is going to be much slower with 8 or more gigabytes of RAM, doing a large memory-demanding task(s).

Most times my PC is multi-tasking: bacFkground Internet...

Thanx - many noobs like me are still learning, cos we come from the CLI-free world of GUI computer usage (Windows, IOS, etc).

    X, K, L- 'buntu - many alternatives too.

So many 'buntus are NOT the one Ubuntu/ Unity. I use other derivations: Mint 12.04 & Xubuntu. If Pinguy ever considers 12.04 stable, I might return to either Ultimate or Pinguy.

    I disagree with...

    EXT4, BTRFS, NTFS-3G & NTFS-W7 ... please.

The supposedly superior EXT4 does not have encryption nor compression. NTFS-3G is not the same as NTFS-W7, but BTRFS is, with compression, file-permissions, multiple-dates, & encryption.

"real budget offering" includes Processes per watt !!

In most parts of this planet, electricity is expensive, in the lifetime use of a computer. AMD loses big time in this regard. Simpletons only examine immediate purchase price. Life long running...
  7. kernel (2.6.35) on my Sandy Bridge notebook - seems ok

Have been doing this since it was released for notebooks. Numerous distros (RPM, DEB), many recent version numbers. Will now add on kernel 3.1 -- hoping & risky.

    Luckily my top-of-the-line HP...

In my direct experiences, all my Ubuntu 10.04 auto-upgraded to 10.10. I kept on with EXT4 all the way.

When I was limited to EXT3, I had to re-install from a new DVD. Are you guessing, or...
