  1. What's up with the 6870 versus the 6950?

The 6950 should have better performance from a hardware perspective, i.e. double the RAM and more stream processors, but in almost every benchmark in the article the 6870 seems faster. Any idea why?

    Donations for OSS ATI driver

I really appreciate the hard work that's gone into the Open ATI driver. I made my decision to purchase a new ATI card because of this, but know my 1 ~$200 card is peanuts to ATI and probably nothing...

    Everyone ignore this troll

If you don't know this, he with the most code wins in oss. Period.

Don't like the current development model or the current developers - download the code, fork it and show everyone you're right....

Cool - Might I ask for some performance numbers? Also, what did you change to speed things up (might make it easier for some devs to chime in).

    Don't feed the trolls

Seriously, others in this thread have stated it - but don't feed the trolls.

From a regular user perspective, 6.12 did pretty much everything I wanted. I understand developer constraint and with...

    Sorry if I wasn't clear - I already got it working. :)

Thanks for adding how to do it if you compile your own kernel - if I was doing it myself I would have just embedded the firmware as well. I...

Just to follow up, the problem is that Debian separates out firmware from the kernel. Also, since Debian's initramfs-tools init script loads modules before premount, this means that modules that now...

Radeon KMS doesn't work at boot

So, I got Radeon kernel modesetting working fine after startup by falling back to a terminal, stopping anything using X, rmmod radeon, modprobe radeon modeset=1, and restarting X. However, when I try...

I took a look at Debian experimental. Looks like some dependencies are currently broken so I can't just apt-get install to the newer versions cleanly. Compiling from git doesn't scare me, but I don't...

Thanks a bunch - compiled Radeon from git and everything seems to work as advertised with one minor warning. Loving KMS terminal switching, btw. :)

As far as the minor issue, when running glxinfo...

Trouble with Radeon KMS on Debian

So with the lack of newer X server support in fglrx, I decided to take the plunge and try out the open source drivers. However, I ran into a minor problem. When I enable KMS and start X, I get a...

I have a HIS fanless HD4650 - http://www.hisdigital.com/un/product2-400.shtml. I got it from NewEgg almost a year ago. Sadly they no longer carry it. It works really well with fglrx since I got it...

Thanks for all the hard work. One less obstacle to going OSS for me. I have a fanless card and was afraid of possible overheating without powersave.

Wow. Reports like this make me think I need to try harder getting my 4600 working with the OSS drivers.

  17. OSS Radeon Drivers in Debian Testing are a letdown

Finally got around to testing out the OSS Radeon drivers. I started with the defaults in Debian Testing (Squeeze) with kernel 2.6.30 and radeon 6.12.3.1 and my Radeon HD4600.

    While it did worked...
