Me too (Thinkpad Z61m, Gentoo, 64-Bit, Kernel 2.6.25.4, X14000, X.Org 1.4, KDE 3.5). The same happened with 8.4 (and on kernel 2.6.24), but not as bad as with 8.5. It seems that some parts of the...

I've got no framebuffer support in kernel, so I assume this is yet another side effect of the somehow broken EDID data handling that also makes it impossible to use 1680x1050 with 7.12 on my...

I do not think this is AGP-specific, because I get the same error with the x1400 PCIe on my Lenovo Z61m when using an external (analog connected) 1680x1050 LCD.

When I unplug the external LCD X...

Glad you solved your problem. But I would not really call the ati-drivers-8.433 ebuild "official", just because it is in the portage tree. Afterall, it is still masked, and should at least be renamed...

Personally I prefer to have as little fglrx options set as possible, as for me it seems to work best with most left with their default values.

But perhaps more important: I found that the "old"...

Why do you waste all the help the users provide via the bug tracker?

The current technical issues set aside, my biggest question is why on earth AMD/ATI does not pay more attention to what the users report on the "inofficial" bug tracker

I simply did a quick test running glxgears under valgrind (via "$ valgrind --tool=memcheck --leak-check=yes glxgears"). After only 4 glxgears "iterations" (the poor FPS are...

Hey, what a clever workaround :D Tried that, seems to work perfectly.

For those running Gentoo here is a quick HOWTO:

I think it's in the driver's and/or amdcccle's "communication" with X. AFAIK xcb is stricter about when/how/who/how long/... clients can lock resources/datastructs etc.

    So, if we agree that...

No. It's the same problem :)
A X.Org server compiled without xcb support (using old XLib instead) should allow you to run amdcccle.
But without xcb you have to kiss compiz goodby, so choose wisely...

8.42 + AIGLX + compiz gives a preview that it might really work someday (maybe even soon), but with the current "known" bugs it's not useable yet. Without compiz it works for me, and has best 3D...

    I had the same problem.

I just tried and recompiled X.Org without xcb feature (deactivate the "xcb" USE-Flag and do a "emerge -avuND world"). Guess what, now amdcccle runs fine here :)
