Single thread have many problems:
1) Context switching - thats expensive, and less cores mean more freaquent occurance
2) Power efficiency - more varied task less opportunity to switch off. And...
Framerates are bogus.
For one thing they do not scale linearly with GPU performance (and I mean it literarly! If GPU do given frame 10ms faster for X driver, You CAN NOT say how much more FPS it...

That 4.5 is mostly NV extensions rebranded as ARB, or other older extensions without much modifications.
As right now OpenGL 4.5 lack:
* assigning task to subGPU units (like, this engine will do compute, that will do 3D stuff, and we will borrow that engine from iGPU to do post processing...)

Quick assessment on what's easy from 4.5 extensions list?
* Multiple contexts wont imply flush on context switching (for apps that use one context per thread)
* DSA will allow for middle ware to work friendlier with main code (state change is more atomic)...
