  • Distro for PostgreSQL database

    Hello,

I am building a home server to host a medium size (~100GB) PostgreSQL database. I have tested a couple of different distros and postgresql performance seems to differ significantly. Since its a simple home server behind a firewall, security and stability are not a concern. What would be best platform to use in terms of performance? Whether its Linux or BSD or even OpenSolaris does not matter.

I don't know why the performance should vary. Personally I use GenToo simply because a server needs no GUI just SSH but any other distro should perform the same. I can only imagine different PostgreSQL version to be used and maybe kernels with differing parameters but that's it. In GenToo you can tune your kernel easily so this might be a plus.

Kernel, hardening, scheduler, lots of things I suppose.

Anyway, so far it seems that Ubuntu Karmic Server (2.31) is about 30% faster than Ubuntu Lucid Server (2.32) on PostgreSQL, both ext4.
