You're insane The picture looks like you have installed the driver using the software management, but you're saying the opposite. Could you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log please?

Do you have got the file

          /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so?

Can you try a "modprobe fglrx" and restart X? Does modprobe fail to load fglrx?

Also, it may be easier just to enable Mandriva's "non-free backports" repository, it has got the latest fglrx release in it.

You seem to be using a bit mirror or haven't updated it for a while. fglrx 8.471 is in non-free/backports for a while now, as you can see at this random, german mirror:

              ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/...free/backports

I don't use Mandriva outside vbox at the moment, but are planning to do a larger test when Mandriva 2008.1 (Spring) releases, because the RC2 already is very nice. So I can't help you that much without using it by myself, sorry.

I could never get the driver directly from ATI to install. Whenever I checked the logs it had blown up in one place or another. Luckily somebody at Mandriva apparently knows how to do this since the latest fglrx is already in the nonfree/backport area, and that installed with no problems. Here is one of many download sites:
