Success Stories with 8.42.3 and AIGLX

Hi, does anyone have run Compiz/Beryl/Compiz-Fusion with 3d-Apps/Xv-Videos not flickering and a useable Firefox at the same time?

For the ones who have the Slow-scrolling and glitch in open animation, try remove fglrx from the white list and install Xgl to see if the slowdown and glitch still exists. My tests suggest that those glitches are not AIGLX related, but a problem since 8.41 driver.


Come on those who defend AMD/ATI, tell us your driver worked flawlessly...

With Compiz enabled, I get the slow scrolling issue in Firefox, and tearing in mplayer using Xv. All previous drivers ran smoothly, and without a hitch.

With Compiz disabled, the above issues disappear.

Other than the above, no problems with my driver. Now, what works for me, doesn't seem to work for a lot of people here for various reasons. I've been on ATI cards since 1998ish and I'm a patient person.

ATI FGLRX 8.42.3 was tested on the following cards for me, in the following setups.

(Desktop: Antec Sonata II)
ASUS A8N-E S9393 PCI-E16x1
AMD Athlon 64 x2 3800+ S939
2x512 MB OCZ Premier in Dual Channel Config.
ATI X1800XL PCI-E 256MB
Creative X-Fi Xtrememusic (ugh, creative is worse than ati...they still don't have a driver for my card in 32bit).

Samsung LCD @ 1600x1200

(Dell Inspiron 6400)
Intel Duo 1.6 GHz
1 GB RAM
ATI X1400 128MB/128MB Hypermemory
Integrated Sound
Ricoh Card Reader

Laptop LCD @ 1280x800

Installation was done on two clean installs and one non-clean install. Installs are as follows and were all done in Ubuntu:

Desktop: Gutsy 7.10 Commandline-install
Inspiron: Feisty 7.04 Normal Install (the non-clean), Gusty 7.10 Commandline-install

Feisty was already set up with 8.40.4 at the time of the installation of 8.42.3. (and prior to that, the ubuntu repo fglrx was installed). Finally all installs are 32-bit.

Commandline installs are essentially the server versions (or minimalist version). From that point I built a system with just what I wanted. All setup was done in the command line only (as you don't have a pretty gui to work with: it's not installed)

Which meant xfce, synaptic and a couple other applications including mplayer and pidgin. Probably going to add a bit more, but hey, when your minimal install is only about < 1 GB, I'm game.

No errors were encountered in the steps listed in the above guide. No warnings, no error.
The one (and only) issue during install was having Mesa instead of fglrx...that was fixed by doing:

sudo rmmod fglrx
cd /lib/modules/*/misc
sudo insmod fglrx.ko
modprobe fglrx

Other times, I just wiped all fglrx and related packages off the face of my computer, and then installed it clean. I should mention this should be done with xserver off.

The first command did nothing as it wasn't there in the first place...maybe it'll be different for you. Perhaps this isn't a good way to do it. *shrug*. Ultimate way to screw things up: doing things you think is correct, and later on having it bite you in the back -_-...been there done that.

Initial setup and then setting Xv mode.

sudo aticonfig --intial
sudo aticonfig ---overlay-type=Xv

On a not so fresh install you might want to try

sudo aticonfig --initial -force

The /etc/X11/xorg.conf should also have your composite enabled in Section "Composite" as well as Section "DRI". Also you can try making sure that "dri" is in the modules section of your xorg.conf...I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your problems. It didn't seem to do much with regards to my drivers though...

...on a side note, also added was the double buffer module. Good to go with conky (no flicker, woo).

Also for those using Ubuntu Gutsy, you can give the testing .deb package a spin.

For those wanting to know, 8.42.3 was not approved to be added to the repo.

That was about it in a nutshell. Verify the install using fglrxinfo and glxgears to ensure it was running, and watches some 720p anime (Hayate no Gotoku) in mplayer. All was right with the world.

Glxgears also went a lot faster than 8.40.4 that's for sure. 300+ FPS increase at least on my x1400. I can't say much about my x1800 as I don't have any comparison figures. -_-

On to Compiz...

Compiz for Feisty was installed using the official repositories. I ran into a white screen issue but that's because it was using Mesa drivers instead of the appropriate ati dri. That was fixed using the commands mentioned earlier (to get it to use the right driver...)

After install, a bit of configuration, and launched it. Wobbly windows ftw. However, slow scrolling in Firefox (it wasn't TERRIBLY slow, but slower nonetheless), and the wonderful tear/flashing in mplayer. I watch anime a lot, so this wasn't exactly very welcome.

Options at this point is to do X11 mode, or shut off Compiz for the time being until (hopefully) subsequent drivers fix the issue.

Probably after I get off work, I'll be trying some ET:QW on my x1800 desktop. Look forward to it xD

Suspend and Hibernate: Broke with 7.04+fglrx...maybe because of the SLUB allocator. None of the workarounds work with it on Feisty, and I have not tried it yet on Gutsy. I'll update later when I do give it a try.

Dual head setup? Haven't tested yet either. I don't normally run double screens, but if you want me to give a try I can give it a run.

I have made the same experiences.

X1950 Pro 512MB PCI-E Express
I have tried Beryl, Compiz and Compiz-Fusion, so the issues are caused by the fglrx driver.

I am going to disable Compiz and keep on waiting for a new release.
